- 10h ago (18:25 GMT)World Cup 2.0: Why women’s Olympic football is a must-watch at Paris 2024Less than a year after the global breakout success of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia, a good number of that tournament’s best players are back. This time, the global football epicenter is the Paris Olympics 2024, with 12 teams fighting for the gold medal. World champions Spain are among the favorites to taste glory, even though the team is making its Olympic debut in the French capital, while perennial heavyweights the USA are looking for redemption after suffering their worst-ever World Cup result. Team USA’s neighbors Canada are the defending Olympic champions after they did the unthinkable at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, defeating highly-favored Sweden in the gold medal match. Disappointingly, the Swedes are not taking part in the Paris 2024 Olympics after failing to qualify. Joining them on the absentees list are the United Kingdom, who couldn’t secure an Olympic berth through the inaugural Women’s Nations League. With senior professional players and full-strength squads, the 12-team women’s Olympic football event offers a star-studded and premier global football competition of the highest quality when compared to the 16-team men’s event, which is restricted to under-23 players with an allowance for only three over-age professional players. The fan interest in women’s Olympic football competition is expected to be higher than ever, thanks to the success of the 2023 World Cup, which attracted record global television viewing figures. - 10h ago (18:20 GMT)Paris Olympics 2024 controversy puts focus on ‘sexist’ women’s sports kits The official Nike kits for American women competing in the Paris 2024 Olympics have been slammed as “a costume born of patriarchal forces” by one track athlete and “treating women as second-class citizens” by a commentator on Nike’s Instagram page because of the skimpy nature of the swimming costumes and leotards. Meanwhile, France has been criticized for its decision to bar its sportswomen from wearing the hijab.Although the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has allowed international athletes to wear the hijab, French sportswomen will still be barred from exercising the right to wear the outfits of their choice during the Summer Olympics, which started on Friday and continue until August 11.Whether it’s a question of sexist outfits or a ban on the headscarf worn by some Muslim women, directives can impinge on women’s freedoms and needs, activists say. Women should be allowed to wear outfits they feel comfortable in, they say.We take a look at the debate around women’s attire in athletics.Click here to share on social media
- 10h ago (18:15 GMT)USA: A team in transition With a new coach at its helm and a squad featuring upcoming stars, a new-look Team USA is competing at the Olympics.England’s Emma Hayes has been hired to turn around the team’s fortunes and the experienced coach could be a breath of fresh air that the American women’s game needs.Hayes, who led Chelsea to seven Women’s Super League titles, took over the reins just before the Olympics, although her appointment was announced late last year after Vlatko Andonovski resigned in the wake of their bitter World Cup exit. After successive triumphs in 2015 and 2019, Team USA was expected to complete a “three-peat” of titles at the 2023 World Cup, but the Americans were knocked out in the last 16, losing to Sweden on penalties. The pressure is on Hayes as she manages a team trying to find its way back to the top of the world rankings, having slipped to their lowest-ever spot (fifth). There is also pride on the line for the four-time world champions.Click here to share on social media

- 10h ago (17:44 GMT)Japan shock Brazil in Group C Momoko Tanikawa scored a stunning 96th-minute winner as Japan netted twice in injury time to come from behind and beat Brazil 2-1 on Sunday. Japan, the 2012 silver medalists, were staring at a second straight defeat in Group C that would have left them in serious danger of a first-round exit after Jhennifer put Brazil ahead early in the second half. But captain Saki Kumagai rolled in a 92nd-minute penalty to equalise at the Parc des Princes in Paris before 19-year-old substitute Tanikawa’s incredible first-time shot from 30 metres sailed over the goalkeeper and in for the winner. The result means Japan and Brazil – silver medallists in 2004 and 2008 – are now level on three points after two matches. World Cup holders Spain also have three points before playing Nigeria later in Nantes.Japan squandered a first penalty in stoppage time at the end of the opening half, as Mina Tanaka’s weak kick was easily saved by Lorena in the Brazil goal after Rafaelle was penalised for handball.Brazil then went ahead on 56 minutes as veteran star Marta, playing at her sixth Olympics, sent a superb ball in behind for Ludmila, who teed up Jhennifer to fire in. It looked as though that would be that – but Japan won another spot kick for handball following a VAR review, this time by Yasmim, as the game went into injury time.Kumagai made no mistake from the spot to level matters for Japan, who lost 2-1 to Spain in their first outing. But Japan were not finished, as Tanikawa pounced on a loose pass by Rafaelle to score the jaw-dropping winner.Click here to share on social media

Here is all to know about the sport. What is breaking?
- Breaking is an urban, improvisational dance technique, typically performed to hip-hop music with drum breaks. It comprises four kinds of movements: top-rock, down-rock, power moves and freezes. The roots of breaking lie in the emergence of hip-hop culture in the United States. The 1990s saw the first international breaking competitions.Currently, the Red Bull BC One, which first started in 2004, is the sport’s most prestigious annual breaking championship.World DanceSport Federation has been the sport’s official governing body since 2018.Breaking was introduced in the Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 2018.

If he could leap over each one — and do it quickly — he stood a chance of joining Canada’s Olympic track and field team. If not, his Olympic dreams would be over for the year. But there was a bigger obstacle weighing on Lindo’s mind.Just one day prior, an officer from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) had telephoned with instructions for Lindo to report for his final deportation proceedings. He had less than two weeks to pack up and leave the country.Read more: A dream deferredClick here to share on social media

In Paris, Israeli athletes will receive round-the-clock protection from a specialist elite unit of French police, in addition to their own enhanced security measures. The country’s participation in the games amid its brutal war on Gaza, in which more than 39,000 Palestinians have been killed, has provoked criticism of Olympics organisers, who have a long history of banning nations deemed to have indulged in acts that contravene the spirit of the games. Two countries will be absent from this year’s Olympics: Russia and Belarus, as a result of the ongoing war in Ukraine. Those demanding the ban say Israel, which has been accused of genocide by South Africa in its case at the International Court of Justice, must face the consequences of its actions.Read more about the 13 countries banned from the Olympics in the past for reasons such as war, doping, political stances or violations of IOC rules.Click here to share on social media
